Hazardous Waste Disposal in Eastside King County

Disposing hazardous waste products shouldn’t be a complicated task. But for those of us who have looked for options, the process can sometimes be quite confusing. 

If you live in Kirkland, Redmond, Bellevue or surrounding eastside cities there are several options for disposing of hazardous waste products. 

This guide aims to answer the most common questions when the topic of disposing hazardous waste products arises. 

Most hazardous waste materials can be properly disposed for free at:

Factoria Recycling & Transfer Station 13800 SE 32nd St Bellevue, WA 98005 Open Tues-Fri 8 am – 4 pm / Sat-Sun 9 am – 5 pm

Do note that the Factoria location will not accept liquid latex paint but they will accept oil-based paints.

For oil-based paints they require that the containers must be 5 gallons or less and the total waste limit per trip is 50 gallons.

Before heading to the Factoria location make sure to keep reading so that you are aware of the special guidelines they have.

How do I dispose of paint?

There are several different types of paint but the most common ones are: Oil-based, Latex, Water-based, or Acrylic paint.

According to Hazardous Waste Management Program Latex, water-based, or acrylic paint can go in the trash if:

  • There is less than an inch of paint in the can and it is dried
  • There is more than an inch of paint in the can and it is mixed with cat litter or paint hardener and solidified
  • Throw the can of dried paint in the garage with the LID OFF

If you’re unable to solidify your latex paint or if you can’t tell if it’s latex or oil-based paint, you can dispose of your paints at the following locations:

  • McLendon Hardware located at 17705 130th Ave NE Woodinville, WA 98072 (425) 485-1363 will accept up to 10 gallons of paint and the individual containers must not be bigger than 5 gallons. 
  • Miller Paint located at 11730 118th Ave NE Kirkland, WA 98034 (425) 822-6092 will accept up to 20 gallons of paint and the individual containers must not be bigger than 5 gallons.

What kind of hazardous waste can I dispose of at Factoria?

Common Hazardous Disposable Items

  • Gasoline is limited to 25 gallons per visit.
  • Batteries are limited to 5 per visit.
  • Fluorescent light bulbs are limited to 10 bulbs per visit. Broken fluorescent light bulbs must be brought in plastic bags or closed containers. 
  • Motor oil is limited to 25 gallons per visit.
  • Propane tanks must be 8 gallons or less and have a limit of 50 gallons per visit.

Household cleaning supplies, automotive fluids, pesticides all are limited to 50 gallons per visit and must be brought in their original containers that are no bigger than 5 gallons each. 

What’s important to note is that the Factoria location will only accept up to 50 gallons per visit. An example would be: 20 gallons of gasoline and 30 gallons of miscellaneous household cleaners. The gasoline would have to be delivered in appropriate containers of 5 gallons or less and the household cleaners would have to be delivered in their original containers that are no larger than 5 gallons each.
